A few words about the SPOT GPS Trackers that all participants will be required to carry along:
The SPOT tracking device is about the size of a cell phone and will be strapped to your bike. It reports your location every 10 minutes via satellite link and the results are displayed on a mapping website. This technology will help with the coordination of event volunteers so they can be at the right place at the right time. Friends and family will also be able to access the tracking website so they too can monitor your progress. The EM1240k course heads out into some truly remote areas that have limited or no cell phone coverage. If you have an emergency while out of cell phone coverage, there is a "Call for Help" button on the SPOT unit that you can use for assistance. Additional information on the SPOT trackers is here. The features of the tracking website are detailed here.
